Flat Feet and Foot Orthotics: What You Need to Know

Healing Haven Physiotherapy • September 19, 2024

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, is a condition where the foot's arch - that gap beneath the inner part of your foot when standing - is either partially or completely collapsed. While some people with flat feet experience no discomfort, others may experience pain, particularly during physical activity, or other complications such as misalignment issues with the feet and legs.

Symptoms and Risks of Flat Feet

The most apparent sign of flat feet is when your feet's entire soles come into close contact with the floor when you stand. However, other symptoms can include:

- Pain in the feet, particularly in the heel or arch area

- Swelling along the inside of the ankle

- Difficulty with foot movement, such as standing on your toes

- Back or leg pain

When left untreated, flat feet can lead to more severe problems like plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and Achilles tendinitis.

Foot Orthotics: A Solution for Flat Feet

Foot orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts designed to support, align, or improve the function of the feet. They can help manage the symptoms of flat feet in the following ways:

Comfort and Cushioning

Orthotics provide extra cushioning for the feet, reducing pressure on the arches and providing relief from discomfort.

Improved Foot Mechanics

Custom-made orthotics are designed to correct biomechanical foot issues, helping to enhance the foot's alignment and improve overall foot and leg function.

Even Weight Distribution

Orthotics can redistribute your weight across your feet, relieving pressure points and helping to prevent foot fatigue.
