When Should You See a Physiotherapist?

November 3, 2021

Are you struggling with pain? Is your pain getting worse despite taking medicine? If so, physiotherapy might be exactly what you need.

Physiotherapy isn’t just for exceptional athletes or those recovering from an accident.

In fact, it can be used to boost your health in a variety of unexpected ways.

In this blog, the health professionals at Healing Haven Physiotherapy will discuss when you should consider seeing a physiotherapist.

You Experience Constant Pain

Pain is common. In fact, it is the most common cause of hospital visits around the world.

In some cases, pain can be due to trauma or an injury. In other instances, fibromyalgia and numerous systemic rheumatologic illnesses have been associated with widespread, generalized pain.

Fortunately, a physiotherapist can do a lot to help you with your pain. Physiotherapists use ‘healing hands’ (hands-on treatments) to reduce pain by stimulating specific nerve pathways so that they become less sensitive. They can also educate you on dealing with exhaustion and effectively pacing your physical activity and daily activities.

You Don’t Get Enough Sleep

We all know that sleep is essential. Yet, for some, it may be difficult to obtain. Quality sleep eludes many people, particularly those who are in pain.

Physiotherapists can help enhance your sleep quality by alleviating your pain. In addition, a physiotherapist can propose a sleeping position that is healthier for your posture and is less stressful on the rest of your body. For example, sleeping on your stomach is terrible for your spine because it flattens the natural curve of your spine, causing lower back pain.

You Have Mobility Difficulties

If you’ve observed that you’re not as flexible as you used to be, or that moving is more difficult than it used to be, you might benefit from seeing a physiotherapist.

A physiotherapist can evaluate your condition and prescribe a series of exercises to strengthen the supporting tissues and relax your muscles. This allows you to increase your flexibility gradually.

Your posture may not be something you pay special attention to throughout your workday. But, if pain or injuries to your back, neck, or legs begin to occur, your posture could be a contributing issue. A physiotherapist can devise specific exercises to improve the postural muscles and coach you through the recovery process.

You Have an Injury That Takes Forever to Heal

It is hard to judge how long an injury will take to heal. Since many of us experience aches and pains that usually go away within a few days, people will often ignore discomfort for a while in the expectation that it will resolve itself.

However, pain that does not improve on its own may require the services of a physiotherapist. Keep in mind that some issues, such as Achilles tendon pain, may resolve with rest but reoccur when you return to sports activities such as jogging.

If this is the case, then strengthening and rehabilitation may be the way to go. This is where a physiotherapist comes in.

Your Balance Is Off

The structures inside your ear are critical components of your body’s equilibrium system (known as the vestibular system). Consequently, issues with your inner ear can cause balance problems.

Any illnesses or abnormalities affecting the inner ear can cause various symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, and balance disturbance, which can be exceedingly difficult to live with.

To alleviate these symptoms, a physiotherapy procedure known as vestibular rehabilitation can help. A physiotherapist can construct a sequence of head, neck, and eye exercises after assessing your unique needs to help retrain your central nervous system to compensate for inner ear abnormalities.
