Tips on How to Get the Most Out of Your Massage

admin • July 7, 2022

Scheduling a massage is one of the best forms of self-care that you can provide yourself. A massage done by a registered massage therapist can relax you, rejuvenate you, and allow you to perform optimally throughout your day.

This is particularly true if you’re currently struggling with tight muscles, sore joints, or general compromised mobility.

Because there are so many benefits of massage therapy , you want to ensure you’re getting the most out of your massage. For some, this might simply mean booking a massage and giving yourself time to relax.

For others, taking extra steps to improve your massage can make all the difference in truly reaping all the benefits of massage therapy

Follow these tips next time you book your massage with Healing Haven Physiotherapy for the best massage possible:

Schedule your massage strategically

When you have a busy schedule, you might feel tempted to try and fit your massage in whenever you have availability. Unfortunately, though, when you don’t consider the timing of your massage, there’s a strong possibility you might not get all the benefits from the session.

We suggest booking your massage on a low-stress day. You shouldn’t be rushing to your appointment, you don’t want to have any important meetings right after your session, and you certainly don’t want to have such a stressful day that you can’t even enjoy the massage.

If you live a high-stress life, at the very least, schedule your massage with plenty of time before and after your appointment so you can prepare and decompress after to fully absorb the benefits.

Exercise beforehand

You don’t need to exercise immediately before your massage, but doing a workout at some point during the day before your massage can help loosen up your muscles and get them prepared for massage.

You also might notice points of soreness or stiffness during your workout. This provides you with great information to give to your massage therapist for optimal results.

Shower beforehand

Showering before your massage is another easy way to help loosen up your muscles and prepare them for massage. Again, it’s not a necessity, but if you really want to experience massage therapy at its best, this will help.

Don’t eat/drink beforehand

Eating and/or drinking immediately before your massage can impair your ability to absorb all the benefits. This is because your body will be expending energy and resources to work through digesting the food you just consumed.

Having an empty stomach helps your body solely focus on the relaxing effects of your massage.

Be honest & open with your massage therapist

One of the best tips we can provide you with during your massage is to be open and honest with your therapist. If you’re experiencing pain during your massage you should feel comfortable telling your therapist.

If you notice a lot of soreness in one particular area of your body, communicating this to your therapist can ensure that time and attention are given to that body part. And lastly, being open and honest gives your therapist the information and feedback they require in order to ensure you get the best massage possible.
